The mineral fluorite (calcium fluoride) is used in iron smelting and as a source of fluoride in making hydrofluoric acid. The mineral shines in both visible and ultraviolet light, giving rise to the term fluorescence (glowing).

*To avoid confusion with fluoride, the alternate name fluorospar is sometimes used.
