The early Triassic period, which comes right after the largest mass extinction in earth's history, was a time of recovery fo earth and a time for diversification of life. In the mid to late Triassic period three important new groups of animals appeared: pterosaurs (flying reptiles), dinosaurs, and mammals.

The synapsid reptiles, which were related to mammals, were in a period of decline and were never able to fully recover from the mass extinction. While their descendants, the mammals, would survive this group of reptiles would become extinct my the end of the Jurassic period.

The mammals of this time were primitive. They laid eggs and simply secreted a milk-like substance rather than having teats to feat their young through. Mammals would remain small and play a relatively small role until the end of the Cretaceous period.

Closely relater to dinosaurs, the pterosaurs were the first vertebrates to fly where the only previous fliers were insects and would later come to share the skies with birds. Their wings were membranes of skin stretched on very long digits. Triassic Pterosaurs were small. These animals would go extinct at the end of the Cretaceous period.

The dinosaurs were perhaps the most important new group of the Triassic. Contrary to classic depictions these animals were fairly swift and possibly warm-blooded. They would come to dominate the earth for 160 million years. They would be decimate at the end of the Cretaceous period, leaving the birds as the only group of dinosaurs alive.

At the end of the Triassic period there was another mass extinction event. This wiped out a number of different groups of reptile, leaving the dinosaurs with more room to diversify in the next period, the Jurassic.

Thus Triassic stratigraphy is mostly based on organisms living in lagoons and hypersaline environments, such as Estheria crustaceans.At the beginning of the Mesozoic Era, Africa was joined with Earth's other continents in Pangaea. Africa shared the supercontinent's relatively uniform fauna which was dominated by theropods, prosauropods and primitive ornithischians by the close of the Triassic period. Late Triassic fossils are found through-out Africa, but are more common in the south than north.
