I think the major struggles in The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle is that Charlotte is a girl who can't really seem to do anything on her own and she is basically afraid of life when no adult is around her to protect her or tell her what to do.

The exposition of "The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle" introduces Charlotte as a young girl traveling alone from England to America in the 19th century. She is presented as a proper and naive young lady who is forced to navigate the challenges and dangers of life at sea. Through the exposition, we learn about Charlotte's background, her family situation, and the circumstances that lead her to embark on this perilous journey.
