Its operation is based on the ionizing power of the radiatio, and it is a fairly simple, cheap and tough piece of gear to take into the field.

We also use other counters that are based on the same or similar principles to detect radiation. The scintillation countercan be designed to "look" more specifically for gamma radiation, or the alpha and beta particulate radiation.
