Cynclines and anticlines are mountians "folded" or distorted into basins and ridges by powerful pressure forces within the plastic mantle of the earth. When and if they rise to the surface of the earth (either by uplifting or erosion of overlaying layers of rock) they may become mountian ranges. The basin and range region west of the Rocky mountians serve as an example of folded ranges.

∙ 13y agoFold mountains are located in zones where tectonic plates are colliding with each other. A very good example is the Himalayas where the Indian plate is colliding with the Eurasian plate.
