To be a Broadway actor/singer is more competitive than television or film. Why? Opportunity. The Broadway stage is in New York. There are only 39 Broadway theater's and shows come and go. The cast is only so large. Where there's a new tv show every five minutes, practically; and filmmaking, from independent to epic films are being done regularly. Thus, with only thirty-nine places, not always active, it's limited. An up and coming Broadway actor/singer (male or female), certainly must and does work in other places; i.e. West End (England's Broadway), Off Broadway, Off Off Broadway and Community Theatre in practically every city, state you can name. To work on Broadway continually, even if one does get into a Broadway show is low. Broadway shows can close in a minute. And having been in a Broadway show, if one can get in one, never guarantees another one for months or years, if ever. Most Broadway legends were in another era and/or did go on, sometimes for years, doing television and film work. The days of Broadway stars is gone, really. One may get a following in a hit Broadway show; nevertheless, a clever Broadway celebrity will go on to tv and film and/or music. To name a few: Idina Menzel, Kristen Chenoweth, Shoshanna Bean, Sarah Jessica Parker, Matthew Broderick, Nathan Lane and others have been on Broadway. Of course, they have all done tv and film. And nowadays, many tv and film celebrities go to Broadway after achieving some level of success in the the aforementioned businesses. If one really wants to perform on Broadway. The person would have to be dedicated to taking acting, voice classes and dance classes and working hard at gaining experience in community theatre and Off Off Broadway mostly. Eventually, a truly dedicated performer, interested in being on Broadway must move to New York and make contacts, sweat in badly air conditioned or non-heated tiny theatre's all over the NYC area. Maybe for years and be willing to do just that.
