1. Chinese wedding ceremonies end with fireworks. 2. Chinese weddings gather people for a banquet after the ceremony, usually on a restaurant. Western couples invite people to their home. 3. The Chinese bride and groom are usually chosen by their parents; if they disobey their parents' wish, they can be social outcasts, lose their jobs and so on. Marriage in China is thus more of a social contract between families than a binding of love. 4. The couples keep their names, while Western couples take a common name, traditionally the man's name. A child of a Chinese couple take the father's name.

The tradition of holding up a person on a chair while dancing originated with weddings. The Talmud discusses the practice of carrying a bride on men's shoulders while celebrating the wedding with dancing. This tradition then grew to the bride and groom being lifted on chairs which then grew to other celebrations.

Is it for a child, or is it a wedding anniversary? If it's a child, look for something that is either useful or cheap. It won't last long anyway. If it is a wedding anniversary, look for something meaningful.
As much / as little as they are willing and able to afford.
