Some Filipinos are described as too religious because they fully embrace a non-indigenous religion imposed by Spaniards during colonization. They believe that God intervenes, sees their every move and washes away their sins as long as they go to church on Sundays. Beautiful churches tower over the houses of poor people, some of whom watch television instead of doing productive work because they believe that the Christian god pre-plans their future and will intervene and help them.

Just like central and south America, the Philippines was a colony of Spain. As the result, the majority are Catholics. This is also why you see many people in the Philippines have Spanish last names.

Filipinos come from a country where the Catholic religion has long been dominant. However, whether or not people are born with the tendency to be religious is something that scholars have long debated (there is some evidence human beings are "hard wired" to believe in a religion, but skeptics say this is simply cultural conditioning). Therefore, it is difficult to say that Filipinos (or people from any other country with a dominant religious culture) are simply religious by nature. But there is certainly evidence that the pervasiveness of Christianity in the Philippines makes being religious seem like the norm, while being a skeptic is discouraged. Thus, the dominance of Christianity and its close identification with the culture is one important factor in why Filipinos continue to be so devoted to their faith.
