To enter a PhD program you need to have completed a BA/BS in a degree program. Generally, you also need to have completed a MA/MS as well . Some programs will allow you to begin a PhD without the Master's, but they will grant you a Master's in the middle of your PhD program. This means the units for your fist 2 years of a PhD program goes to fulfill the Master's requirement. Depending on the university you may have to take entrance testing to get into a program. Once you begin a program you will have at least 2 years of classes before you begin your dissertation research and you will have to do a residency at the university. The dissertation is a book of at least 5 chapters and has a specific framework that has to be followed. This can take another year or two depending on what your research is about. Finally, once the committee of 5 approves your dissertation you will have "orals" where they ask you to defend your work. Finally, it goes into editing ( which I found to be awful) and you edit your work. Most people take about 5-7 years to do a PhD and it is very expensive.
