The people who take the Lord's Supper should be Christians; they believe in Jesus Christ's death as an atonement for sin and accept that Jesus died in their place. People who take the Lord's Supper should have a clear conscience towards God and their fellow believers.

Some Christians believe that the bread and wine/juice are simply symbols; others (such as Catholics) believe in transubstantiation.

Roman Catholic AnswerThe minimum requirements would be that you are Catholic, and have made your first Holy Communion (which would mean that you were baptised, are of the age of reason, and have made your first Confession). Given all of that, to worthily receive the Holy Eucharist you should be in a state of grace, which means that you have recently been to confession, and that you have been fasting for one hour prior to Holy Communion. It is seriously recommended that you be recollected, and spend some time before Mass preparing for reception of the most Blessed Eucharist, and that you spend some time after Mass making a good Thanksgiving. It is extremely edifying to read the document that St. Pius X put out on frequent Communion and realize that the vast majority of Communions these days are most probably sacrilegious and dangerous.

What do you receive when you receive the Most Holy Eucharist?

Roman Catholic AnswerWhen you receive the Most Holy Eucharist, you receive Our Blessed Lord: Jesus, His Body and Soul, His Humanity and Divinity. If you are in a state of grace - have been baptized and been to confession - then you receive all the graces necessary for your salvation. If you are NOT in a state of grace, you are eating and drinking your own condemnation; which is one of the reasons that the Church does not allow non-Catholics to partake of the Most Holy Eucharist, and why she insists on confession before approaching the altar.
