Very simply, a player bids. If he makes his bid he gets ten points for every trick he bid that he takes. He gets an additional point for every additional trick (called bags). If he accumulates ten bags he loses 100 points. If a player does not get his bid, he goes back ten times the number of tricks he bid (no bags). If he bids nil, and makes, he gets 100 points. Failure to make nil sets the player by 100 points.

Depending on the form of bridge, there are multiple answers to this question. To start, all forms involve determining the score of a given hand. To do this, follow these rules:

If the contract was made:

• Determine the value of the contract (20 per trick for a minor suit, and 30 per trick for a major suit or no trump (plus in no trump an extra 10 points for the first trick only).
• If no one doubled, overtricks are scored the same (20 per trick in a minor, 30 per trick otherwise)
• If someone doubled, the contract value doubles, overtricks are 100 each, and there is a 50 point "insult" bonus
• If someone redoubled, all the "doubled" values above are doubled again
• If a small slam was bid and made, a 500 (nonvulnerable) or 750 (vulnerable) point bonus is awarded
• If a grand slam was bid and made, a 1000 (nonvulnerable) or 1500 (vulnerable) point bonus is awarded

If the contract failed:

• Undoubled undertricks are 50 each if not vulnerable, 100 if vulnerable.
• Doubled undertricks depend on vulnerability: total of 100/300/500/800/(keep adding 300) if not vulnerable; 200/500/800/(keep adding 300) if vulnerable
• Redoubled undertricks are 2x the doubled values above.

In rubber bridge, the contract value goes "below the line" and everything else (overtricks, undertricks, insult, bonuses, honors) goes above. "Honors" can be claimed by anyone: 100 points for holding four honors in the trump suit, or 150 points for holding all five, or for having all four aces in no trump.

When a partnership reaches 100 "below the line" they have won that game and they are considered "vulnerable" for the remainder of the rubber. A rubber is completed when a vulnerable partnership wins a second game. A bonus is then awarded to them of 500 or 700 points, depending on whether the other side won a game (500) or not (700) in the rubber.

In duplicate bridge, each hand is scored independently; all points are added up, and a bonus of 300 (nonvul) or 500 (vul) is added if a game (or slam) is bid an made; if not, a bonus of 50 is added. Vulnerability is arbitrarily assigned to each pair at the start of the hand. Honors are not scored.

From there, each pair's score (which is positive for one pair and negative for the other) is compared with the scores of other pairs who played the same hand. Different methods are used to determine their matchpoint scores, depending on the type of event. The simplest is to give the pair one matchpoint for every pair they outscore, and half a matchpoint for every pair they tie.

scoring bridge is the most difficult of all games to score. There are two different games labeled as "bridge, rubber bridge and duplicate bridge." Rubber bridge first: You have contract points, those that you bid for, and bonus points, which come in extra, such as setting an opposition contract or making more tricks than you contracted for. A contract point is determined by the suit which is contracted and get scored 'below the line': no trump is 40 points for the first trick and 30 points for all subsequent tricks; spades and hearts are major suits and are scored at 30 points for each trick; diamonds and clubs are minor suits and are scored at 20 points for each trick. A rubber is when a team wins 2 out of 3 games, and each game is the first 100 contracted points. The winner of the rubber is the team with the most total points when the first team wins 2 out of 3 games. Extra bonus points are rendered for holding the top 5 cards, A, K, Q, J, 10 in the suit of trump for 150 points, holding the top 4 cards is 100 points, or if you play no trump there are 150 points for you if you hold all four aces. For every trick you fall short of game, you yield 50 points to the opposition if you have not yet won a game, and 100 points if you are "vulnerable," which is having already won one of the games. If they think you cannot make your bid, they have the option to "double" your bid with one of their bids, and you then give them, for tricks less than your bid, 100, 300, 500, 800, 1100, etc if you are not "vulnerable," and if you are, the sequence is 200, 500, 800, 1100, etc, plus you get another 50 points for the insult if you are doubled, and 100 points if you redouble. If they double you and you think you really can make it, your bid is to "redouble," making your win 4 times as much, and if you are set here, the cost is twice what the points listed above happen to be. This makes bridge a very contentious game of business with lots of math and statistics, which is the greatest social event of all time, light merry pastime or cutthroat competition with $$$ per point.

Duplicate bridge is another game altogether. Every team plays the same hand as all the other teams in the game, and the one who plays the best on most of the hands is the winner. Every hand is assigned a vulnerability, so the score does not continue from hand to hand. There occur several differences, thus, in bidding and styles of conventions, but it is played basically the same, earning the same points, except that there is nothing awarded for honors in hand.
