Bronchioles

The bronchioles or bronchioli are the first airway branches that no longer contain cartilage. They are branches of the bronchi, and are smaller than one millimeter in diameter.

There are no glands or cartilage in any of the bronchioles, and the epithelial cells become more cuboidal in shape.

The bronchioles terminate by entering the circular sacs called alveoli.

Control of airflow resistance and air distribution in the lungs is controlled by the bronchioles.

The Trachea breaks into 2 bronchi, when entering each lung, then it continues to branch off until finally branchioles, which are ended in aveoli. Aveoli are the sites of carbon dioxide and oxygen transfer.

You have two main bronchi which arise from the trachea. Each bronchus divides into ten secondary bronchi. Each divides into two branches. This go on getting repeated for about 17 times. Each divides at right angle to the first division. This is called as bronchial tree. So you have 20*2*2*2---17 times. Such is a big number of terminal bronchiloles. Then you have the alveoli getting divided for further six times. So the number of alveoli is 20*2*2----23 times. This gives you the total surface area of about 100 square meters or 1100 square feet.

They are called the bronchiThe smallest [air] tubes in the lungs are the broncioles they terminate the larger bronchi.Inside your lungs the two bronchi tubes divide into small bronchial tubes. The bronchial tubes then divide into bronchioles, which are even smaller air passages. Tiny air sacs, called alveoli, are on the ends of the bronchioles. The small tubes located within the lungs are known as the bronchial tubes. The bronchial tubes function is to purify the air that is going into the lungs, when the bronchial tubes become inflamed and swell, Asthma attacks can occur.
