Chemical Digestion takes place in your mouth Because you have to make it softer by chewing it. While you chew it, your saliva (your spit) breaks it down even smaller! By then, it will be small enough to go to your stomach. Because your stomach can't chew your food.

First, the food is chewed by the teeth into small pieces so it can be more easily broken down. Next, the saliva from the 3 saliva glands start to break down the food in the mouth and throat. Food that is just about to be swallowed and is at the back of the throat is called "bolus" (bowl-us).
