This is a simple piece in which Hardy uses a device which marks many of his poems: contrasting events before Emma's death with the present. Before Emma died Hardy would take his accustomed walks alone, not perturbed by (because not really thinking of) the fact that Emma was left at home.

The theme is to show how you should be with someone you love and not neglect them the way Thomas Hardy neglected his wife. And you can see how much he regrets that afterwards in the way he expresses his point by using rhyming couplets. There is a sense of loneliness when he gets back to the room.
