Wavelengths of the visible spectrum*:

380-420 nm: violet,

420-440 nm: indigo,

440-500 nm: blue,

500-520 nm: cyan,

520-565 nm: green,

565-590 nm: yellow,

590-625 nm: orange,

625-740 nm: red.

Related Information:

* The data, above, is based on average human visual abilities. Some can see wavelengths slightly shorter than 380 nm, into the ultra-violet range, and some can see wavelengths slightly longer than 740 nm, into the infra-red range. Additionally, in terms of perception, there is some overlap throughout the range. There are many animals that visually function through, and outside, this range.

More Information:

White light, as from the sun, has all the different colors in it. They fit together seamlessly and all have different wave lengths. At the short end of this spectrum, is violet and at the other end, is red. Violet's shorter wave lengths are more penetrating than the longer red wave lengths. The remainder of the spectrum is invisible to us, having wavelengths that are too short or too long for our eyes and nerves to process.

How does the eye perceive different wave lengths?

as different colors

Why do different colors absorb different amounts of heat energy?

when a substance appears of a particular color, it is actually absorbing all the wave lengths of the light spectrum falling on it and reflecting only one wave length peculiar to that color. So, different colors absorb different wave lengths and hence, different amounts of heat energy.

What bends light rays?

A prism bends light rays. White light is made up of many different wave lengths of light. A prism bends each wave length a different amount, that is why different colors are produced from the output side of a prism.

What causes the different colors in the spectrum?

Visible light contains all of the colors with in the spectrum. The only way we see color is the bending and refraction of the visible light sending certain wave lengths back, which our brain interprets as different colors.

Why can you see people?

You can see people because light reflects off of them and then hits your retina (rods and cones) and a signal is sent to your brain. Different materials absorb different colors (wave lengths) of light, so that makes the different colors.

What do the white areas in the interference pattern represent?

The interference of white light creates a spectra. The different wave lengths are each diffracted to a different extent causing successive interference of the colors

Light of different wavelengths is different colors?

Yes that is true. Different wavelengths means different colors. The amplitude of the wave determines how bright the light is.

Do all colors have the same wave lengths?

The visible light part of the electromagnetic spectrum is below the ultraviolet but above infrared. Purple light has the highest wave length and red has the lowest.

What are wave lengths in your eye?

wave lengths in your eye grab light and make it the colour you see

How does color work?

Humans perceive different wave lengths of light as different colors. Objects are struck by all the colors. If all the colors are reflected off the object, it is perceived as a white object. If all the light gets absorbed by the object and none is reflected, Then the object is perceived as black. If the object is blue, only the blue light will be reflected and all other wave lengths will be absorbed by the object. The eye would then perceive the object as blue. That is why black clothing can sometimes be hot to wear.

What is the relation between wave length and the color of light?

Different colors have different wavelengths
