∙ 11y agoI know way more than 3 basic types, but assume history, then you have the line printers, the matrix printers and now the ink-jet. The line printer must be included because most software still use the same code to send to the printer. With the matrix, you could draw pictures in black and white, and is still used to print tickets - anything that need impact to be in duplicate or triplicate.
The printers today are ink-jet with wet ink developed by HP, you have the heat technology that is used to create photographic prints using a number of technologies, dominant is Epson and TI made some very high-end devices. The third category is the "laser" printers, that use a tiny laser to melt particles to produce the output, dominant in the high-end output, with technologies from Xerox and Hitachi - the old makers of copying machine. A hybrid is the LCD technology, that is used at the low-end of the "powder printers" - sells as "laser printers" but use LCD technology.
On the software side there are the three interface: text only as to a "line printer", and every line ends with a "CR" and "LF"... Then you have the Adobe Postscript, that use low-level PDF to print a page at a time, and variants of this driver is supported by a number of manufacturers with own extensions. The third category is where the entire page is produced as a picture in software, and sent to the printer as a "picture". Typical here is fax - that use a kind of TIF-format and send this on the telephone line as encoded signals, that is decoded and reproduced. But also large laser printers use a similar interface.
