Knitting is done with NEEDLES. They are smooth pointy sticks with a cap on the end to keep the stitches from falling off the back side. Needles also come in double pointed kinds with a point on either end. These are for knitting in the round when you want to make a tube with no seams (like a sock or a turtleneck) You hold the needles one in each hand move them in a specific way that threads a continuous piece of yarn into little interlocking loops. This is how you knit yarn into a usable, wearable fabric.

In addition to Needles, you need basic needlework supplies like scissors, tape measure, ruler, instructions for your pattern, and an iron and ironing board to finish your work neatly. You might want some specific convenience tools that are sold for knitters to make their work faster or easier. Lots of people buy stitch counters, which basically help you keep track of stitches in a pattern so it's easier for you to follow along and keep your place. If you get distracted easily or you have a difficult time following patterns, you might want one.

Point protectors are little rubber caps that look like tiny gnome hats. People buy them to put on the end of their needles when they stop knitting. The point protectors keep the stitches from slipping off when you have tired of knitting for the day but your have not finished the project.

There are tons of other little gadgets that I don't have and don't use but that lots of people seem to like. Before you rush out and buy a bunch of knitting related stuff, ask yourself what areas you have trouble with. Once you know where you need help, you'll know what extra tools might be useful to you. Otherwise you'll have a drawer full of unused knitting gadgets that you find you didn't need to buy.

Best of luck--Jo

There are two main stitches in knitting - knit and purl. The knit stitch is made by passing the needle from the front of the stitch to the back, winding the yarn over the needle, and pulling it back through the stitch.

Purling is done by holding the yarn in front of the work, passing the needle from the back to the front of the stitch, winding the yarn over the needle and pulling it through the stitch.

For basic crochet the tools you will need are yarn or crochet thread, and a crochet hook of the appropriate size (it should say on the yarn which size hook to use). These are all the tools that you NEED, but a yarn needle would also be useful, and there are many other peripherals that you could make use of, such as a stitch counter, stitch holders, instruction books, flower maker, etc.

What is modular knitting?

Modular knitting is a form of knitting that involves knitting small geometric shapes that are pieced together into a larger product. The most intriguing feature of modular knitting is perhaps the varying directions in which the stitches move and interweave with each other. Entrelac, another knitting method, is similar to modular knitting.
