What is the worst army base to be stationed at?

Opinions vary far and wide as far as this goes. Personally, the two posts I'd never want to be stationed at are Schofield Barracks, Hawaii and Fort Polk, Louisiana. Others may have differing opinions, based on what their personal criteria of 'worst' is.

Schofield barracks replaced us in Afghanistan, most of that battalion was reupping to stay in hawaii at that base they loved it. Of the 40-50 soldiers that I talked to during that 2 weeks I was still there with them, I only got 1 island fever i need to go, the rest were never gonna leave schofield barracks, it's Hawaii and close to honolulu which is what most people want. Now my base on the other hand had very few people reupping to stay there, they were doing anything possible to pcs outta ft campbell, it feels like prison or a deployment having to stay in rural kentucky/tennessee!!. And if you have to drive 1 full hour from "base" to get to Nashville, thats too far to have to drive all the time just to enjoy yourself!!

Here is a comprehensive list of the us top 10 worst army bases including a number of factors used to compile this list such as weather, location, far proximity to national or renowned universities and colleges, far proximity to major or middle sized cities which have tourist destinations & major shopping malls and overall activites to offer soldiers, approximity to mass transport such as airports, proximity to mountains & oceans & lakes. # of dedicated bike paths & running paths & mountain climbing & fishing and boating areas and public gun ranges. # of of gyms and movie theaters on base, and #of gyms and movie theaters off base. How many computers that have internet access are dedicated for soldiers to do army work at each battalion or each company and does the base offer plenty of internet for leisure time (mwr"s) for soldiers and does the base offer free wifi. Does the base have an always availabe ed center open 7 days a week with internet access from pt time to late night for all soldiers wanting to take college courses. What soldiers think of being stationed on that base and there overall thoughts of the best and worst army bases in the us as surveyed.

1. Ft Leonard Wood, MO - Theres nothing there and its a basic training post

2. Ft Campbell, KY - Highest suicide rate in the entre military the last 6 out of 7 years. Surrounded by two smaller cities oak grove, Ky and clarksville, TN. Both of these cities by normal standards are dumps. And it rains on average of 123 days a year at ft campbell. The nashville airport is 1:10 drive from on post so its a little hike to escape this depressing base.

3. Ft Polk, La - Nothing there and humidity is overwhelming year round. Base is being looked at being closed by BRAC. This would make hundreds of thousands of soldiers very happy as they compare it to being deployed being there.

4. Ft Sill, OK - See # 1

5. Ft Knox, KY - See # 1

6. Ft Drum, NY - Humid temps in the summer, Tons of snow and freezing temps in the winter, And 1:20 from the nearest town, Watertown. Middle of nowhere

7. Ft Rucker/Ft McClellan, AL - These bases have long been on the BRAC closure list, not many gyms and mwr's on post. It's a very depressed social and economic area.

8. Ft Greely, AK - 4 hours from any city including small cities. This is the most barren army base in the US. Be careful of the wolves and polar bears in your everyday life.

9. Ft Detrick, MD - Not much of a post, Not many social opportunities for soldiers on base and off base. This is a small town quiet post, nothing going on.

10. Ft Irwin, CA - This base is the only base located in California, and because of this many california residents try to get stationed here so they can commute home on weekends and visit family regularly and since california has more soldiers than any other state it's not ranked as low for this importance, otherwise it's a desert piece of land in the middle of the Mojave Desert.

It's really a matter of opinion. For example, I'd disagree strongly with Fort Drum being on that list. While the humidity is a factor, and the cold during the Winter, I wouldn't describe it as being "in the middle of nowhere". For weekends, you're within reasonable travel distance of Buffalo, Albany, NYC, Ottawa, and Toronto. And the 1:20 travel time to Watertown is grossly incorrect - in 1:20, you could be in Syracuse or Kingston - Watertown is about a 15 - 20 minute drive away.

If you're an outdoors sort of person, there's lots of activities there. Even if you don't feel like traveling far, Kingston, ON and Syracuse are each about an hour's drive away. As far as the post went, I liked Fort Drum better than Fort Bragg (although I greatly preferred the 82nd over 10th Mountain), and I preferred both over (the now closed) Camp Greaves, Korea.
