(1) system software (2) application software
If you want to break down software into to basic types there is "system software" and "applications". System software would include everything from the BIOS or Operating System on your computer to the firmware on your DVD player. This type of software interacts with the hardware to do base level things like booting your computer or manage the power distribution to the various devices that make up your computer. This level of software uses the hardware to provide basic services and functions to operating systems, which then in turn provides an environment for applications to run. Applications are the type of software that most people are familiar with and that you most commonly interact with. This interaction is the difference between system software and application software. With system software the interaction is (mainly) with the hardware of your computer. Whereas with applications the interaction is with you. Applications allow you to actually do something with the hardware and system software. Your question specifically asked for two type's of software. I decided to lump the OS in with system software although really it should be considered it's own type of software. Try thinking of a computer as consisting of four layers; hardware, system software, operating system, applications. The hardware interacts with the system software, which provides basic functions and services to an operating system, which finally provides a user environment in which your applications run. Software is the basic set on instructions supported by hardware to perform memory, arithmetic and logical operations. Thus ultimately there aren't "two types" of software. Of course to express an algorithm in machine code is tedious. There are two types of programming, one low level (assembly language) the other high level (BASIC, C, C++, Java, Pascal, PROLOG, Fortran, ADA, ALGOL, PERL, Python, et-al) which take the tedium out of generating patterns of one's and zero's. Perhaps that is what you're looking for?
