The chemical acetylene is used as a fuel some times, and a chemical building block. It is used in Oxyacetylene welding. It has other uses such as hardening steel, and it was once used to light up towns via street lights.

Because when it's mixed with pure oxygen and burned, it produces an extremely hot flame. Also, of the three fuels that produce the hottest flames, acetylene is a "simple asphyxiant" (which means it's not poisonous, but it displaces oxygen so you'll die if you breathe it) and the other two are cyanide-containing poisonous gases.
