The chemical acetylene is used as a fuel some times, and a chemical building block. It is used in Oxyacetylene welding. It has other uses such as hardening steel, and it was once used to light up towns via street lights.

∙ 12y agoBecause when it's mixed with pure oxygen and burned, it produces an extremely hot flame. Also, of the three fuels that produce the hottest flames, acetylene is a "simple asphyxiant" (which means it's not poisonous, but it displaces oxygen so you'll die if you breathe it) and the other two are cyanide-containing poisonous gases.
