Back-stitching generally refers to going "backward" over the first few stitches, then forward again. This is used to "lock" the stitches in place, to help prevent unraveling.

It is used at the beginning of the stitch run, and again at the end. You only need to back stitch just a few stitches.

Is there a way to mark your counted cross stitch pattern with something that will come off easily to allow for design placement of backstitching. In Nora Corbetts alphabet fairy letters there are free flowing designs that are difficult to count placement of and it would be nice to mark the fabric and follow that. Using Water Lily Aida 16ct. fabric for Alpahabet Letter "A". Please check it out and notice long wavy lines through dress and forming design in outside border of letter A. Thanks.

This usually refers to working from left to right instead of the usual right to left. The double crochet itself is not different. At the end of the last row do not turn. Work a dc into the last stitch of the previous row, then another into the next to last and so on. It feels odd at first, but you'll soon get the rhythm and it makes a nice edge.
