The smallest blood vessels in your body are called as capillaries. The typical diameter of the capillary is 8 micrometer. The diameter of the aorta is about 2.5 cm. The number of capillaries is very high. Together capillaries have enormous cross sectional area. One text book mentions that the total cross sectional area of the capillaries is about 2500 square cm.
