Of the eight traditional subspecies, only five are believed to exist, according to the Tiger Foundation. The eight subspecies: Sumatran, Indochinese (Corbetts), South Chinese, Siberian (Bengal), Bengal, Balinese, Caspian and Javan. The first five exist but are endangered. The Javan was the last of the remaining three to survive, and the South Chinese is on the brink and there may be not enough to make its survival viable. The Malayan tiger was identified as a ninth subspecies in 2004 by the Laboratory of Genomic Diversity. It is still alive. There are also hybrid varieties in zoos and white variations. There are disagreements on the categorization of tigers.
