Remnants of the Import Substitution Industrailisation era from the 1950's onwards have contributed greatly. Over mechanisation of production, not taking into account Brazils' surplus of cheap labour and instead bypassing the long stages to industrial growth by purchasing (putting the country into large foreign debt-leading to balance of payments problems) the latest technology which is non labour intensive therefore does not create jobs for the population rather profit for foreign owned subsidiaries which repatriate profits to home countries. Transport which means that the coastal towns are well linked to the outer world however lack of good infrasturcture inland has led to difficulties in market trading for inland communities.
