it is a type of soup made from the korm of the kalo plant (taro)

"Poi" can also refer to one or two ball-like objects swung on "leashes" of some kind. For example, the poi used in traditional Maori poi swinging, or in modern fire poi dancing. See Related Links for examples of modern poi.

I'll assume your refering to the New Zealand act of manipulating a weighted object at the end of a flacid one, and not the food.

. Poi was originally used as a method of killing birds, and soon after adopted in the act of story telling by spinning the poi in a fashion along with interpretive dance.

Fire poi is quite common in festivals (burning man), all of which are considered to be a form of juggling.

On a personal level; poi is great for aerobic excercise, hand eye coordination

, and UBER FUN AT PARTIES! I have LED balls in a mesh-net sock.

Poi balls are also good for the natives in new zealand because it keeps the womens hands flexable for weaving & it helps the men by them using it as a training aid for battle.
