The first part has to do with the different tools and technologies that are generic to any industry, that is to say they are "industry agnostic" and are considered to be "horizontal" in nature. The second part has to do with those tools and technologies that are industry specific, that is to say they are tied to industry "verticals".
Part 1 - Horizontal Information Technologies:"Horizontal" Information Technologies include but are not limited to those technologies tied to each of the many IT Disciplines (see reference link to The International Foundation for Information Technology's inventory of IT Disciplines). Since the list of disciplines is so large, it is better to simply give an example... "Document Management," as a discipline, correlates directly to "Document Management Tools and Technology." The pattern is consistent. If you simply append the string "Tools and Technology" to the end of each IT Discipline, you will have a very large list (in the many hundreds) of the different types of "horizontal" information technologies.
Part 2 - Vertical Information Technologies: "Vertical" Information Technologies include those solutions that are specific to a vertical industry or business. Examples include but are not limited the many different types of IT industry that exist. For example:
- Biological Information Technology
- Communications Information Technology
- Financial Information Technology
- Healthcare Information Technology
- Insurance Information Technology
- Pharmaceutical Information Technology
- Telecommunications Information Technology
- Etc. (The list is very long)
