Orginally windmills were used as a source of power to turn stones to grind grain and make flour. Many can still be seen in places like The Netherlands. Wind turbines are a different mechanism and are used to collect wind power as a "green" alternative to using fossil fuels to make power.
Windmills provide energy to allow things to run. They are an alternate energy source that not many use, but are very good for the environment.
