Birds roost in a safe place to rest or sleep every night. They tend to poop multiple times in one place because of that. Another reason why an area might get multibombed is if a birds nest is in a tree above the locale and the parents will remove all poop from the baby birds and just drop it over the side. A dove's nest above my wife's car is a testament to this.

birds are more likely to come to a bird bath on hot days, if you make sure the water is clean and put some wild bird seed (you can pick this up at supermarkets) around it they will come

birds are messy naturally. they were just born that way, so i guess you'll just have to clean their bowl alot. hope that help. =]
