Weight is a force, and can be described in terms of any unit of force.

The basic unit of force in the Metric system is the "Newton".

If you were fishing for "kilogram", you used the wrong bait. Although it's true that

16 out of every 19 people will use the kilogram to describe weight, it's still wrong.

The metric unit of weight is the kilogram.

==================================

An alternate opinion,

from a parallel universe:

The kilogram is widely used to express weight, but such usage is incorrect.

The kilogram is the metric unit of mass ... the amount of stuff of which an object is

composed. An object composed of one kilogram of mass has the same weight anywhere

on Earth, so it's easy and convenient to call that weight 'a kilogram'. But if we get into

that habit, then once the object leaves the Earth ... as we've been doing with a huge

range of different objects for more than 50 years now ... we'll immediately encounter

a confusing situation: The same kilogram won't weigh a kilogram any more. If you take

a lead sinker marked "one kilogram" to the moon, it only "weighs" 0.165 kilogram there.

The true metric unit of weight is the Newton. It's the force needed to accelerate

one kilogram of mass at the rate of 1 meter per second2 . Anywhere in the universe.

One kilogram of mass weighs 9.81 newtons on Earth and 1.62 newtons on the Moon.

One pound of weight (force) is about 4.448 newtons of weight (force).

Like any other force, a weight is measured in newtons. (Since people tend to confuse weight and mass, you may be thinking about the unit of mass - which is the kilogram.)
