Did Ulysses S. Grant do anything important in may 1862?

No, he didn't. On Apr. 30, 1862 he was "de facto" relieved of the command of the Army of Tennessee (UN) and appointed its "vice commander" by his superior in rank, general Halleck, although he was the winner of the battle of Shiloh. Halleck immediately "ignored" him and Grant was therefore confined to mere administrative duties. That situation endured until Halleck was appointed as General in Chief of the Union Army in July 1862 and had to move to Washington. Grant was then appointed as commander of The Armies of Tennessee and Mississippi (UN.) which were covering the sector starting from the lower course of Tennessee and the middle course of Mississippi.
