During World War II, the turning point in the Pacific came in June of 1942 with the Battle of Midway. While the decisive defeat of the Japanese in this battle did not ensure that the United States would go on to achieve a quick victory in the war, it did ensure that the Japanese would not gain a quick victory, either. Given the industrial advantage of the United States, the assurance that the war would continue for several years (due to the Battle of Midway) all but guaranteed that the United States would emerge as the ultimate victor.
