Well, this answer could be similar, so here's my answer: The 13 colonies were broken into 3 sections, New England colonies, Middle colonies, and the southern colonies. :)

Then, as colonies began to grow, the three sections of the territories became known as the New England Colonies; The Middle Colonies; and the Southern Colonies. As time passed, the name America, was used to describe the colonies. Then, the United States of America, after independence was won from England, when the American Revolutionary War was over and done.
