Some add panther to this list, but that is a misnomer. Panthers can be one of many cats, including the jaguar, in the Panthera genus. Ocelots are in the Leopardus genus and should not be confused with the leopard, which are in the Panthera genus. Leopards are not indigenous to South America.

Jaguars live in the rainforests of South and Central America. Tigers live in the jungles of Southeast Asia. Leopards live in the rainforests of Asia and Africa. Note that the above big cats do not exclusively live in rainforests.

Both the jaguar and the cougar are large cats that are found in the Amazon. There are also a number of smaller species of cats found there, including the margay, ocelot and jaguarundi. Of all the listed species, only the jaguar is classified as a big cat.

Leopards occupy most of the Congo rain forest. Lions used to occupy the south half, but now mostly do not. Cheetahs never did. Servals.
