Osteoclasts are the cells that breakdown bones by releasing enzymes and resorbing the bones. This sounds negative but it's actually very important for bone health because it allows your bones to be remodeled. About 10% of adult bones are remodeled in a year; in the first year of life, almost 100% of the skeleton is remodeled and replaced.

Osteoclasts are the bone cell that destroys bone. This allows bone remodeling, and allows the skeletal system to act as a reservoir for minerals to maintain blood mineral levels.
Bone cells that are involved in reabsorption and breakdown of the bone matrix are referred to as osteoclasts.

What is an osteogenic cell?

Osteoblasts are cells that are mainly known for making bone. Also, they break down old and weak bone cells.Osteoblasts are cells that help construct bones. However, they do not stop working after your skeleton has finished growing. There is another type of cell known as the osteocyte that destroys small areas of bone, which are then filled in by the osteoblasts. Through this system the skeleton is reinforced and reconstructed constantly, so that weak or old spots are replaced and broken bones heal.
