Treats, reward, praise, love are the best. Professional trainers, shock collars can also help for more troubled dogs. Dogs are very intelligent and, like humans, can be "controlled" by all manner of things. Really, though, they just want to please us, and ignoring bad behavior and rewarding good behavior goes a LONG way.
