Low octane fuel. Run a tank of premium through it or add a bottle of octane boost and it will be fine for a while.
An engine might sound like a diesel at operating temperature if the engine was a diesel or if there was an issue with the manifold. Sometimes gases escaping the manifold cover could cause the engine to sound different.
Petrol or gasoline in a diesel will cause internal engine damage. if petrol is used in diesel engine it may cause explosive sound with burning ....bcz high compression ratio ......

If there is adulteration in diesel, you will gt late throttle response. There will be ignition delay. A good diesel gives wafer crisp power delivery & quick throttle response. Good quality diesel gives excellent low end torque & strong pulling power from lower RPM. As per obsevation of Multijet engine of FIAT :- In multijet engine, good quality diesel burns with clattery sound on idle. In multijet engine ,at cold start ,Adulterated diesel gives diesel clatter but diesel clattter disappears when engine goes to operating temp. In multijet engine at full operating temperature diesel clatter disappears & engine revs like petrol engine without sound of diesel clatter.
Its a tappet adjustment that to be done for diesel engines to overcome the noisy sound from the engine which get loose by continueously uses of the vehicle .
You have an old car or it's about to be broken.
My bet is you are reading something that is describing the sound of an engine or engines, probably diesel, running off in the distance. In that case, tattoo would be a synonym for drumming sound.
most likely u need new plugs and a good tune up. i have a mack truck which is quieter and smoother than a lot of cars so comparing with a diesel really doesnt tell one much about your problem
Faulty engine
The loud tapping sound can be caused by a complete heating of the engine. Worn tappets can also cause the tapping sound.
There could be several things causing a knock in the top of your engine, most likely is that you are not using premium fuel. Depends on the engine if its diesel the answer should be right, if its petrol it could as well be a whole bunch of other stuff.
