There are many different possible causes to numbness or tingling. In this day and age the most likely is perhaps the slight pinching of nerves in the arm due to leaning on the edge of a desk. This happens frequently when playing games on the computer, or typing for a long time.
Leaning on the left arm of a chair while watching TV can also pinch nerves in the arm or shoulder.
Repetitive motion (carpal tunnel syndrome) from typing, thumbing a game controller, or even texting can contribute to tingling and numbness.
Diabetes can also cause problems. So seriously consider seeing your doctor and get a blood test.
Generally finger numbness is a result of conditions that affect nerves and/or blood vessels that supply the fingers. It is also associated with tingling. It need to be sorted out if the problem associated with only left thumb. Frequent symptoms are referred as finger paresthesia.
