Stereotyping is categorizing a specific group of persons to have a trait(s). Most of the time society considers stereotypes to be a negative thing that leads to violence, sexism, and racism. However given that certain people fit certain stereotypes, sometimes stereotypes can lead to facts that are genetically linked to a trait, or even solve crimes.

Stereotypes can be about any group of people, such as a certain race, gender, nationality, or profession. Stereotypes are often oversimplified and generalized beliefs about a group that may not accurately reflect the individuals within that group.

Stereotypes can be about nearly anything, and nearly any animal or group of people. Here are common categories of stereotypes:

Animals - "Mice like cheese." "Elephants are afraid of mice." In reality, mice might prefer peanut butter over cheese, and elephants are rarely afraid of mice.

Ethnic groups - The stereotypes include comments about intellect, athletic ability, physical features, criminality, sexual behaviors, etc. The stereotypes here can be seemingly positive too, such as the one about Asians being the smartest race, but they may indirectly harm the groups that are not included.

Sexual orientations - A common hurtful stereotype is saying that people of a particular sexual orientation are more likely to commit illegal acts with children. While there may be a small amount of overlap due to age of consent laws, there is no sexual orientation that is more likely than any other to be involved in that.

What are Jewish stereotypes?

Most peoples (and religions) are steotyped and many of the stereotypes are not flattering. In the case of the Jews it's well known that many of the stereotypes are offensive and inflammatory. The same goes for traditional stereotypes of Blacks, for example. Often stereotypes seem to have originated with people who did not have much knowledge or understanding of the people they were stereotyping, and some stereotypes are caricatures and political propaganda.

How have stereotypes evolved?

Stereotypes have evolved as society changes and becomes more aware of diversity. There is now a greater understanding that stereotypes are harmful and do not accurately represent individuals or groups. Efforts are being made to challenge and dismantle stereotypes through education and awareness.
