I had shin splints for about 3 months, I'm 14 and a runner, i got so fed up that i went for a 5 minute jog, after 5 minutes i got a bad shooting pain up my shin. I then expected my shins to get even worse but they didn't, the next day i went out for a 8 minute run before i got shooting pains, for some reason the pain seemed to get less and less, i then went out for a 20 minute run with no shooting pain just pain around the shin bone, once again the pain seemed to go away a little bit more, now I'm completely free of shin splints (touch wood) and i did it by running again. I wouldn't say this is the treatment but it sure as hell helped me to get rid of 'them'. This might not work for you but you could give it a try, if they start to hurt more just stop. Also after every run ice your shins as this decreases the inflammation built up while running. Never run on hard ground for a long period of time. Don't wear compression socks because it only aggravates the muscle and bone and makes it worse. Hope this helps.

Stretch your shin muscle by sitting on a soft surface with your feet beneath your butt. Also you can stretch your shin by pulling your big toe down. Also, take time off from running or switch to softer surface such as soft trails, the track, or a treadmill. And lastly, make sure to ice everyday for 20 minutes at most each time.
Walking slower sometimes helps. Resting your muscles... not walking for a while usually helps the pain go away. Wearing well-cushioned shoes with good support is a good idea as well.

You could also ice it and stretch it. Tap your foot while standing or point your toes.

If you're a runner and you have shin splints you can also wear long socks when you run.

When you have shin splints you will most likely need to rest your legs until the pain is relieved by the rest. You can also check with your doctor if you get shin splints frequently because you might also have stress fractures of the bones.
