1. To keep guns (cannons) on jets, no matter how modern they become. Prior to the Viet War missiles were replacing guns, like todays computers have replaced typewriters.
2. Don't use tanks, helicopters, and jets to kill one enemy sniper. Use another sharpshooter (fight fire with fire).
3. Don't fight guerrillas with conventional troops. Use guerrillas (SF & SEAL teams)...fight fire with fire.
4. Utilize more UAVs. The Viet War pioneered the use of over 5,000 combat missions by unmanned jets (Ryan Firebees). But still lost over 2,000 jets and that many airmen. UAVs eliminate the human sacrifice (NO MORE POWs! (No more prisoners of war).
5. In small arms (for small arms) "spray and pray" isn't all what its cracked up to be. With fully automatic rlfes firing on "rock 'n roll" (M16s in this case) over 3,000 to 20,000 bullets (rounds... and the amount of ammo expended depends upon whose telling the story) per enemy casualty (read 20,000 bullets to kill one man) is a definite waste of taxpayers money, raw material (copper, brass, and lead), energy, time, and hard on the ears. Selective discriminating accurate fire (accurate bullets) is the way to go.

Yes, as recently as the Vietnam Era.
Well, the Vietnam War Era was between August 5, 1965 and May 7, 1975
Not everyone who served during the era of the Vietnam War went to Vietnam. Some remained in cantonment. Some participated in other military actions during this era (e.g., the occupation of the Dominican Republic, etc.). Some were stationed in other countries in support of operations in Vietnam. "Vietnam-era veteran" refers to them.
You are a Vietnam Era Veteran but not a Vietnam War Veteran
