War is a state of conflict between states, nations, or empires over the following reasons:
1: Nationalism/personal pride (in case of leaders/kings)
2: Wealth and resources (ex: oil, gold, water, wood)
3: Desire to enact vengeance on another state for wrongs
4: Desire to spread one's religion/beliefs by force
5: Desire to destroy a group of people defined as inferior or evil (related to #3 & #4)
It should be noted however, that many wars were started for unusual reasons. Some were started over women, others due to insanity (quite literally), and many over family feuds.
Here's a fun fact about war: War is hell for over 95% of the people involved, but a delicious opportunity of profit & prosperity for a small minority.
