Although colorectal cancer is the most common indication for a permanent colostomy, only about 10-15% of patients with this diagnosis require a colostomy.
A number of diseases and injuries may require a colostomy. Among the diseases are inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer
Among the diseases are inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer.
Although colorectal cancer is the most common indication for a permanent colostomy, only about 10-15% of patients with this diagnosis require a colostomy.
Severe cases require removable of the colon (colectomy). Long standing cases can develop polyps which can turn malignant (cancer) and may also require a colectomy with a permanent colostomy. Some young patients may prefer to have pouch reconstruction to avoid colostomy but will require a specialist centre to carry out pouch surgery.
Some patients with colostomies are able to routinely irrigate the stoma, resulting in regulation of bowel function; rather than needing to wear a pouch, these patients may need only a dressing or cap over their stoma.
This is most often a temporary colostomy performed to rest an area of bowel, and to be later closed.
Any cancer of the intestine may require an ostomy bag (the bag to which you are referring). This includes colon or small intestine. In these cases, the bag refers to which part of the intestine is emptying into the bag (i.e. ileostomy, colostomy, etc) In addition, certain cancers of the bladder may require a diversion of the urinary system to an external bag. In this case, the surgeon will make a pouch from a portion of your intestine and attach your ureters to it, making a false bladder. This pouch is usually made from a portion of your ileum, and is called an ileal conduit with a urostomy bag.
Someone might need a colostomy if they have problems with their colon and all or part of it has to be removed. Bowel cancer is the most common cause but infections and blockages can also be responsible.

A stoma is inserted in the rectum to help keep it clean. This has to do with Cancer patients in the American Cancer Society on the United States of America.
A colostomy is created as a means to treat various disorders of the large intestine, including cancer, obstruction, inflammatory bowel disease, ruptured diverticulum, ischemia (compromised blood supply), or traumatic injury.
An end colostomy is usually a permanent ostomy, resulting from trauma, cancer, or another pathological condition.
