After surgery, the patient's Naso-gastric (NG) tube remains in place until bowel function returns. Bowel rest is necessary for healing, so the patient will not be given foods or fluids by mouth until it is clear that gastrointestinal function is restored. The nutrition and fluids will be given intravenously until sips of water can be started and kept down, then the diet is gradually advanced as tolerated. Pain management is provided. The patient is closely monitored for bowel sounds and signs of abdominal distention, infection, leakage from an anastomosis, or other post operative complications.
