Patels are originally Shudras. Patels are a peasant community of farmer background. The hindu Caste System comprises of Brahmins, Kshtriyas, Vaniyas and Shudras. After these 4, the lowest class is the harijans or dalit.
After the land reforms of the early 1970s, the Patels have become a economically prosperous community in Gujarat, but still enjoy reservations under the Other Backward Castes or OBC status.
