In fact, my uncle is a castle anthropologist famous for his researches. According to his last study - which btw has been published in the Harvad Castle's Review - there are over 55'867'001 Castles (or 55 Mio) on the globe. This number is based on robust facts, after thorough research on the subject.

Across the whole of Europe there are many thousands. I doubt anybody has ever counted them all.
Very few are inhabited, and those that are inhabited have been largely rebuilt so that very little of the original castle survives. Many that do survive are partially in ruins.

there is no such thing as a "fake castle" as long as it looks like a castle and is built like a castle, it is a castle. but, there are more than 1,400 castles still standing in England.

Castles in Europe were made out of many different materials depending on what type of castle it is. For example, Motte and Bailey Castles would have been built out of wood and Stone Castles would (and still are) made out of stone because it is stronger and more sturdy.
Yes the Rochester castle in Kent is indeed still standing today, you can even look around inside it.
