There were several reasons. The Mohawks were the easternmost of the Six Nations of the Iroquois, and thus closest geographically to the English settlements. The relative higher quality and lower price of British trade goods, upon which all tribes had become dependent. Not the least reason was his long-standing personal friendships with Sir William Johnson, His Majesty's Indian Agent for the Six Nations. Johnson was an adopted Mohawk, sponsored by the Mohawk chief.
