What caused the Muslims to split was when they had to choose the first four Caliphs. Some followed prophet Abu Bakar ( Sunni's ) and the followers of Hazrat Muhammad's son in law, Hazrat Ali. The Sunnis followed religious leadership and Shi'as followed kingship.
