In my opinion, having serverd
on board the Iowa and was the last person out of turret two, this is my answer.
1. Old powder that had been improperly rework. Many times bags were pulled out that had tears in them.
2. Improper storage while in Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, all munitions were removed from the ship and placed on a barge on the James River during the summer with NO
climate control. On board ship all powder is stored in air conditioned rooms.
3. A new rammer
men was being trained and over rammed the powder.
4. A discharge of static electricity
In other word it was a perfect storm of several events happening at the same time.
That's why it is called an accident.
