Pope Urban II had a lot of power and wanted to show this power off. He wanted to take off the holy lands, so he called for the people to answer God's call which was to take over the holy lands. He said that the people who faught and died during this crusade would have their sins forgiven by God. This was very influential because the church was very important to the people during this time. Life on earth was not important and the only use for it was to get to heaven. The people were therefore eager to fight. The peasants did not fare well, however. After many deaths of the peasants, a second group of knights traveled to the holy lands and faced a well prepared Muslim army. After much fighting, the knights eventually won and gained control of four cities in the holy land.
Jerusalem was then controlled by Islam. Christian pilgrims were being assaulted, robbed, and sometimes killed by Muslims in the course of their pilgrimages. Rather than negotiate, the Pope responded in a more heavy-handed manner and turned it into a holy war. The word crusade is derived from the word cross.
The reason for the crusades was a war between Christians and Muslims which centred around the city of Jerusalem.
Saladin's conquest of Jerusalem in 1187 caused the Third Crusade.
