Isolophobia is the fear of being alone and it is an extremely common phobia and anxiety disorder. First of all, you must understand the definition of the word phobia. "Phobia" is a word that refers to a group of symptoms brought on by feared objects or situations. It is a persistent, irrational fear that causes a person to feel intense anxiety. Now, people develop phobias concerning any number of things like darkness, Spiders or, in this case, being alone. The thing with phobias, no matter which one, is that they affect people of all ages, at all income levels and in all geographic locations in the world. In fact, about 30% of the world suffers from some sort of phobia or another.

Just why a person develops a particular phobia is not always clear. There appear to be both biological and psychological reasons. Psychologists classify phobias with other anxiety-caused problems and theorize they are a response to separation or loss. Heredity appears to play a role, and so does brain chemistry. If you are suffering from isolophobia, it may be due to a past childhood experience, the way you were raised or something you were deprived of growing up (an absentee parent, loss of a sibling, lack of relationships). I urge you to seek medical help if you feel that this phobia is taking over your life. It is always good to talk with someone about things that are truly bothering you.

Good luck, and remember, you are NOT alone!
